Should You Hire An NYC SEC Whistleblower Law Office?

If you are reading this page, you probably have information about a securities crime or fraud at the company where you work or at some other public company, or at a financial company or investment bank.  You are probably also already aware of the Securities and Exchange Commission’s Whistleblower Award Program, and that under that program, assuming all other requirements are met, if based on the information that a whistleblower(s) provides, the SEC collects over $1 million from the company or individual(s) responsible for the fraud, then the whistleblower(s) will be entitled to receive a monetary reward.  According to the Dodd Frank Act, that award must be between 10% -- 30% of the amount of money that the SEC collects.  What you may be wondering, though, is whether you should hire an NYC SEC whistleblower law office to help you provide your information to the SEC.

Understandably, you might be a bit skeptical of the answers that an NYC SEC whistleblower law office gives you to this question.  After all, they are trying to convince you to hire them.  It would be a lot more useful to you if you could find out what the SEC thinks about your hiring an NYC SEC whistleblower law office, wouldn’t it?  Fortunately, you can.

In September 2016, the SEC’s Director of Enforcement -- the Division within the SEC that investigates cases and brings actions against wrongdoers -- gave a speech in which he praised the role of SEC whistleblower law firms, among other things.  According to the SEC Director, “we welcome the involvement of” SEC whistleblower law firms.  At the beginning of the process, an experienced SEC whistleblower law firm “can help with up-front triage of tips to identify those that have a nexus with the federal securities laws and that may have merit.”  After helping you figure out how to explain your information in a way that will hopefully catch the attention of the SEC, and after helping you to file that information properly, an SEC whistleblower law firm can continue to help you in important ways.  For example, the Director explained that an SEC whistleblower law firm “can work with whistleblowers going forward to identify information that will be important to us and that will allow us to advance our investigations.”  If you are curious about what else the SEC Director had to say, you can read more about his remarks here.

Another thing that many people do not think about is:  what happens if something goes wrong?  What if the SEC brings a successful action but then denies you an award?  An SEC whistleblower law firm can appeal that decision for you to the SEC and hopefully win you an award.

The Pickholz Law Offices was the first NYC SEC whistleblower law office -- in fact, we were the first law firm anywhere -- to ever win such an appeal. (See official SEC Award here.)  In August 2014, Inside Counsel Magazine named our first-of-its-kind victory as one of the “Five milestones in the Dodd-Frank whistleblower reward program“.  To date (September 2016), more than 6 years after the Dodd-Frank Act created the SEC Whistleblower Award Program, the SEC has still granted only two such appeals, ours being one of them.

Now that you have some idea of what the SEC thinks about the merits of your hiring an SEC whistleblower law firm, you might be asking yourself, ok, but which one should I hire?  Once again, you might be a bit skeptical of the answers that an NYC SEC whistleblower law office gives you to this question, since they are trying to convince you to hire them.  Wouldn’t it be helpful if you could find out what people who have already hired those law firms have to say about them?  Fortunately, you can.  Several present and former clients of The Pickholz Law Offices have been kind enough to give us testimonials about their experiences working with us and have authorized us to share them with you.  To read what actual clients have to say about us, please click here or click on the Testimonials link at the top of this page.
