SEC Chair Confirms Commitment to “Stay on the Whistleblower
Beat”

Last week, as I was posting the final installment of my 3-part
article about the recent Presidential election, the Chair of
the Securities and Exchange Commission gave a speech in which
she again praised the
SEC whistleblower program.  If you are an SEC whistleblower or
SEC whistleblower lawyer
and missed last week’s article, you can read it
here.

On Friday, SEC Chair Mary Jo White gave a
speech
at New York University School of Law.  Perhaps anticipating
that her audience would include future corporate lawyers, and
possibly more than one future SEC whistleblower lawyer, Ms.
White devoted a portion of her remarks to the SEC
whistleblower program.

During her speech, Ms. White confirmed that
SEC whistleblowers have
“become key sources of very significant cases” and reiterated
statements she has made before that the SEC whistleblower
program “has had a transformative impact on enforcement” of
the U.S. securities laws.

Ms. White informed the audience that in fiscal year 2016, the
SEC received more than 4,200 whistleblower tips, which is over
40% more tips than the SEC received in fiscal year 2012.  She
predicted that the impact of the SEC whistleblower program
“will only increase in the coming years as the program becomes
more well-known and the significant rewards of participating
in it become clearer to whistleblowers.”

Her comments on the SEC whistleblower program concluded with
her commitment that “The SEC intends to stay on the
whistleblower beat to ensure protection of whistleblowers and
that tips on corporate wrongdoing continue to flow to us
unimpeded.”

Following up on my theme from last week, whether you are a
present or future SEC whistleblower or SEC whistleblower
lawyer, Ms. White’s remarks should be encouraging.
